• Workers feel the company's mandatory internal criticism policy makes Apple "like a cult."
• Apple Store workers routinely face death threats from customers.
• It's easier to get into Harvard than it is to work at an Apple Store.
• Even if you sell an enterprise contract worth hundreds of thousands, all you will get is £8 an hour and a handshake.

Today is “Learn About Composting Day” so it’s a good thing that today is Saturday and Memorial Weekend to boot. Maybe you’ll have time to do some research and then get that garbage out behind the garage rotting where it belongs.

What Wacky happened on this date in the past?

1453 Renaissance starts with The Turks capturing Istanbul (which is now Constantinople) creating a reason for people to dress in odd costumes and act funny at festivals all over the world centuries later.

South Carolina is formally incorporated as a royal colony of England on this date in 1721. In 1790, Rhode Island became the last of the original thirteen colonies to ratify the Constitution and becomes the 13th state. (I live in Wisconsin so I get to celebrate two state birthdays).  The poem, The American Flag by Joseph Rodman Drake is first published in 1819; published in the New York Evening Post. Being that tomorrow is Memorial Day, it’s fitting to read it. CLICK to visit. 

1848 Wisconsin has a birthday today, having become the thirtieth state in 1848. Inventor (?) Abraham Lincoln is granted a patent for lifting vessels in 1849. Indianapolis 500 started on this date in 1911. 1913 Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring premiers in Paris. Its daring harmonies and shifting rhythms created an uproar that is unequalled in music history; well maybe until Rock n Roll came on later in the fifties.

Just before the Rock and Roll era, in 1942 Bing Crosby recorded White Christmas (during the part of the year that the snow just leaves Minnesota and Wisconsin, so he must have been in the mood) and the song eventually sold over 25,000,000 copies (and is still selling today).

C. F. Blair becomes the first man to fly over the North Pole in single engine plane in 1951 and two years later in 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay become the first men to reach the top of Mount Everest (without a plane). Woman gives birth to nine babies in 1972 tying for the highest number medically recorded for a single birth, sadly all died. And, in 1974 President Richard Nixon agrees to turn over 1,200 pages of edited Watergate transcripts. The London Hospital Medical College refuses to sell Michael Jackson the remains of John Merrick, the Elephant Man in 1987. (Don’t ask).

1956 La ToyaJackson American singer (does she even look 60?).

1955 John Hinckley Jr “famous” for shooting Pres. Reagan and James Brady in 1981 trying to impress the actress Jodie Foster. He was tried and found not guilty by reason of insanity. (Perhaps the judge and jury needed their sanity checked?)

1939 Al Unser Sr American race car driver and 4-time Indy 500 winner. It's interesting that he was born on the same date that the Indianapolis 500 started  in 1911.

1917 JohnFitzgerald Kennedy the 35th and youngest person elected president U.S. President. He would not believe how the democratic party has “progressed” to what it is today.

1903 Bob Hope (His real first name is Leslie and if he hadn’t changed it, he may never have become famous and we may never have known about him or his great one liners). He won five Oscars for his humanitarian actions and contributions to the industry. Most notable for living to be one hundred; a merry heart really does do good like a medicine.

1883 Alan Roy Dafoe Canadian physician who delivered the world's first known surviving quintuplets (that’s five) in 1934 (We sure could have used him with those nine babies in 1972).

1826 Ebenezer Butterick was an American inventor, who with his wife Ellen invented the paper clothing patterns that homemakers have used up through today to create their own sewing sensations. I remember those “Butterick Patterns” and had a few shirts made from them.

1781 John Walker English chemist, invented the friction match (1826). He refused to patent his idea, knowing that the world would soon have BIC lighters.

1736 Patrick Henry American patriot who was known for his quote: "… give me liberty or give me death!"

Intelligent and persuasive are common traits of those born on this date. They are rather healthy; which is a good thing since they don’t really care too much about it. They like to spend money on impulse. They enjoy their independence but when married they are mostly romantic, passionate and dependable.

2012 Dick Beals  TV voiceactor, Davey in Davey and Goliath; voice for Gumby; voice of Speedy in the Alka-Seltzer radio and TV commercials, and sang the I'd love to be an Oscar Meyer wiener song. Dick is no longer (I’m sorry, that sounds bad) with us but you may still see the Wiener Mobile in your travels.

1979 Mary Pickford Born in Canada, she became "America's Sweetheart” as an American Oscar-winning silent film actress.

1951 Fanny Brice was an American actress, singer, and dancer whose life was the basis for the musical Funny Girl.

1942 John Barrymore actor and best known for his portrayals of Hamlet and Richard III. According to Errol Flynn, when Barrymore died, some of his friends took his body from the funeral home and propped it up in a chair in Flynn's home to frighten him. Quote: "A man is not old until regrets take the place of dreams."

1866 Winfield Scott  American general who is noted for his service both during the War of 1812 and the Mexican War. He was the last Whig presidential candidate and probably in my ancestry so maybe I need to look up what the Whig party was). 

1829 Sir Humphry Davy was the scientist who discovered the effects of inhaling laughing gas (that had to have been a funny discovery; and by the way, how many other things did he inhale?) and he is about the fourth “inventor” of the “first” electric light and the safety lamp for miners (people over 18 didn’t need the safety lamp because they had the electric light).

1814 Josephine (Last name Bonaparte) until she failed to produce an heir so then she was out of there.

What’s wacky one month out.

June 29^th is a very busy day! It’s Camera, Hug, International Mud and Waffle Iron Day. The actual Waffle Day I think is some other day; this is in honor of the actual waffle iron. And think about the “camera” and just how far we’ve come with that invention. And come on folks, you can’t tell me that you can’t think of some promotion for your business that has to do with mud? You got one month to think of something and leave it in the comments after this article.

July 29^th is National Lasagna Day. I remember when I was first married and told my bride when she served it that my mom used a special kind of cheese when she made hers. It was several National Lasagna Days later before I saw it on my table.

July is National Blueberry Month, National Anti-Boredom Month, Unlucky Month (for Weddings), Cell Phone Courtesy Month, Hot Dog Month, and National Ice Cream Month.

What’s wacky three months out.

August 29^th; you are going to love this one; or maybe. It’s “More Herbs and Less Salt” Day. Herbs are awesome and if you buy just about any packaged or canned food from the store there is already (and some would argue too much) salt so you definitely don’t need to add any. Don’t wait three months to enjoy herbs. Why not enjoy them today?
